Birth Processing

Mothering a newborn can often be intense and all-consuming, and there is little space, especially in our fast-paced Western culture, to take the time to nurture yourself and process your birth experience.

As birth is so visceral, emotions and thoughts related to labour and birth can often become stuck in the body or repressed, only to be played out in postnatal depression, trouble bonding with the baby, relationship challenges, feelings of failure, and physical complaints. If these feelings remain unprocessed, they can influence your life and mothering for years.

Closing of the Bones Ceremony

Thank your body. Process your birth. Nourish yourself. Release trauma.

The Closing of the Bones ceremony is a nurturing and meaningful way to honour your postnatal body, process your birth experience, and take a moment to pause and acknowledge the enormity of bringing life into the world.

The ceremony is for all mothers, no matter how long ago you gave birth, and how you gave birth, whether that was spontaneously, instrumentally, or by caesarean section.

The Closing of the Bones is an ancient Mexican traditional practice, which is typically offered to all women after they birth, providing an opportunity to pause, be nurtured, and symbolically close what has been opened during the labour and birth, both physically, emotionally and spiritually.

The ceremony involves discussion of your pregnancy, labour and birth, steaming, and wrapping with Rebozos, with gentle guidance to support you to process and let go of whatever you may be carrying in your body and heart. Counselling, art and somatic therapy techniques may also be used through the session to help you work through whatever feelings you are holding on to.

You are held throughout this process in a safe space by midwife, doula and educator Aya, and doula and exercise scientist Ariel.

Additional sessions of birth processing available on request, including art and somatic therapy if desired.
